Recipients of the 39th Annual Gallipolis Rotary Memorial Scholarship for the school year 2009-2010 were recently announced by Jodie McCalla, Gallipolis Rotary Club Scholarship Chairman. Recipients include Lindsay Miller, Melissa Stump, Stephanie Sebastian, and Jasmine Waugh. They each will receive a scholarship award of $1000.
Lindsey Miller is the daughter of Larry and Lori Miller of Crown City. She attends the Ohio Valley Christian School and is the first in her class. Lindsey has participated in many activities in her school including Varsity Basketball (captain), Varsity Volleyball (captain), Student Council, Worship Band, Yearbook Staff, Band, and Choir. Lindsey is also a 13 year member of her 4-H Club, For His Glory, in which she has held positions of President, Vice President, and Treasurer and taken multiple projects including clothing and lambs. In 2009, Lindsey was crowned the Gallia County Fair Livestock Queen. She has been a member of the Gallia County Junior Fairboard for three years and volunteers at Holzer Medical Center. Lindsey has already received the Michael Perry Scholarship and the Vick & Mary Niday 4-H Scholarship. She plans to attend Marshall University and study Communication Disorders.
Melissa Stump is the daughter of Arnold and Rebecca Stump of Bidwell. She attends the Ohio Valley Christian School and is the first in her class. Melissa has received several awards in Volleyball, Cheerleading, Soccer, Student Council, Band, Christian Honor Society, and has held numerous Class Officer positions. Melissa was chosen to be a National Ambassador for the 4-H program, “Health Rocks” in which she taught children the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Melissa also serves as a teen volunteer at Holzer Hospital and Holzer Hospice, and participates in community service projects such as Relay for Life, March of Dimes, and Volley for the Cure. Melissa was the recipient of the Holzer Science Award scholarship and plans to attend Marshall University to achieve her ultimate goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
Stephanie Sebastian is the daughter of Paul and Jadwiga Sebastian of Bidwell. She attends South Gallia High School and is the first in her class. Stephanie has been awarded several honors including the 9th Grade Math award, ACT Special Recognition, Regional Scholar, Nominated and Selected for Martin Essex School for the Gifted, and WSAZ Best of the Class. Stephanie will be awarded her Associates of Arts General Studies degree, before receiving her high school diploma this May. Stephanie participates in Beta Club, Phi Alpha Theta Historical Honor Society, the Math and Medical Science Club, National Honor Society, Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Basketball. She also is very involved in the community through her participation in the Y.A.C.H.T Club, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, and St. Louis Catholic Church. Stephanie plans to attend the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and pursue a career in medicine.
Jasmine Waugh is the daughter of Michael and Karen Waugh of Crown City. She attends South Gallia High School and is at the top of her class. In her high school, Jasmine has participated in National Honor Society, Beta Club, PRIDE, Newspaper, BPA, Choir, FCA, Basketball, Cheerleading, SCORES, and power lifting. She has won many awards including the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, John W. Harris Leadership Award, and several other athletic and academic excellence awards. Jasmine also has been an active 4-H member for 10 years, servicing as President, Vice President, and Secretary. She has participated in community service projects such as Toys for Tots, Say Boo to Drugs, Ohio River Sweep, and the Snack Pack Program. Jasmine has been awarded the 4-H scholarship and plans to attend The Ohio State University, majoring in Finance.
